OEM Dodge AC And Heating Parts

Car Heating and AC Systems 101

You probably drive through all sorts of weather, day and night. So, you probably know just how important a comfortable interior temperature is for the ride. Your original AC and heating systems -- climate control system, or HVAC, for short -- maintain it best.

How They Work

It isn't too complicated. Your heater, for example, works like a radiator. It sends hot coolant through a core. A fan blows air over it, warming the air, and that warmth enters your cabin.

Your air conditioner, on the other hand, works in stages, using a compressor, condenser, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. Refrigerant gets pressurized first, becoming a hot gas. Then, it gets chilled, turning back into a liquid. The fluid travels through the valve to become a low-pressure gas once more, and finally, it gets cooled even further. Cold air then flows through your ducts, out your vents, and into your interior.

The Signs They're Going Out

Even the best eventually go bad with age. The symptoms of failure are several, and they're unmistakable. The most obvious: a system that's not cooling or heating like it used to, and degraded parts. Otherwise, look for:

  • The sweet smell of coolant
  • A steamy cabin
  • Clogs in the systems

The causes? Everything from heater core leaks to refrigerant leaks and low refrigerant levels. If you see any (or these related issues), it might be time for an HVAC repair. Do a thorough inspection of both systems first, though, to figure out what's happening. If it ends up that need to buy parts, be sure to get the genuine article.
