OEM Dodge Belts And Hoses

Belts and Hoses 101

What They Do

Many moving parts have to work at the same time for your vehicle to run properly. Belts and hoses are what move most of them.

Belts move things mechanically. Serpentine and drive belts are a couple good examples. They move alternator parts, plus those in systems like your power steering. Timing belts and timing chains, on the other hand, rotate camshafts. These are what help keep engine valves opening and closing and engine pistons pumping in time.

Hoses, however, move things using liquid pressure. Radiator hoses are primary examples. They move coolant between radiators and engines. Heater core hoses are other examples. They move coolant through AC and heating systems, helping warm cabins. Fuel hoses, however, connect engines to gas tanks; you often see them in older cars and trucks. Brake hoses, on the other hand, push brake fluid through brake lines. When the liquid gets to brake calipers, it fastens them to brake rotors, with brake pads in between. This produces the friction that slows and stops wheels.

Lots of other belts and hoses do lots more.

The Signs They're Failing

Unfortunately, though, both can go bad. Symptoms of that are many. Aside from damage that you can see, they include looseness, squeaks, leaking, battery issues, and interior lighting malfunctions. Even engine misfires and overheats can indicate belt and hose problems, not to mention complete systems failures. See any, and you should inspect and replace whatever requires it. Otherwise, change most hoses every 4 years or so and most belts depending on mileage benchmarks. Check your owner's manual for further specifics. Before you buy anything new, though, be sure that you're ordering the genuine article.
